Murphy Goes Forth: Hitchhiking Across the USA

Can a CharlieDogs toy travel across the United States -- from New York to California, from animal shelter to animal shelter -- on his own? Brave, independent "Murphy" will find out!
Ultimate Road-Trip: Can a CharlieDog toy cross the country, from one shelter to the next, on his own?
Driving across New York State for a funeral this weekend, my mind wandered to the first Murphy toy's journey south (he's an item in the September 2012 Poppy Mart auction, a fund-raiser for the worthy Pit Bull Rescue Central). Well, he made it, thanks to the United Parcel Service. But yesterday, as the road rolled out behind me, a hare-brained scheme took shape.
What if Murphy went big? What if he set out, unescorted, across This Great Land of Ours, going from shelter to shelter, working his way ever westward, discovering and photographing shelters and adoptable dogs as he goes, charting a map of America's shelters, ultimately arriving at his westernmost destination?* What if he embraced a narrower theme, and set out to meet our shelters' pit bulls? Or what if he wanted to see the out of the way, less visited shelters?
Would he make it to California? Could he make it there on the largess of shelter volunteers -- especially if we made a $100 donation to each shelter he met along the way?
What do you think?
*CharlieDog and Friends would make a cash donation to these shelters, and a toy donation to each of his "transporters" -- no matter how short the distance of the transport to the next shelter.
